Ciao! Mi chiamo Sarina DePalma. Sono Americana di Richmond, Virginia. Abito a Stati Uniti. Ho ventuno anni. Sono una studentesa di architettura a Roma. Lavoro in uno studio di architettura a Richmond.
Questa è una mia foto con la mia macelleria. Ho comprato il mio primo filetto di manzo che ho cucinato in Roma!
Questo è Renzo Piano. È Italiano di Pegli. Abita a Paris. Ha ottantasette anni. Lui è un architetto importante e influente. Lavora in uno studio di architettura con uffici in Paris, Genoa e New York. Io sono di Richmond, Virginia. Richmond è bellissima. La città è antica e moderna. Richmond non è piccola. C’è un fiume grande e sporco. Roma c'è anche un fiume grande e sporco che si chiama Tiber. Richmond è Roma sono simili. Penso che Roma è più grande di Richmond. Roma è più sporca di Richmond.
La mia routine quotidiana a Roma…
Prima, mi sveglio a sette e mezza. Mi lavo i denti e il mio viso. Pio mi trucco. Poi mi vesto. Generalmente, quando ho tempo, faccio la colazione. Preparo uova con il frutto e avocado. Mi piace il pecorino sopra le uova. Vado alla fermata dell'autobus alle otto e mezza. Arrivo a scuola alle nove. Generalmente, ho clase dalle nove alle quattro e mezza. Pranzo con gli amici al mezzogiorno. Dopo la mia clase, vado alla fermata dell’autobus e vado a casa. Ceno. Generalmente, cucino il pollo con insalata e avocado. Dopo, faccio una doccia e faccio i compiti prima di andare a letto.
Questa è la mia famiglia. Sono davanti al Colosseo Sono dietro a mio fratello. Nik è mio fratello e sei molto buffo. Mia madre è davanti a mio padre e dietro a me. La mia chiama di mia madre è Arpita. Mia madre è simpatica e un po' pazza. Mio padre è dietro a me madre, lui è molto alto. Si chiama Michael DePalma. Lui è intelligente e un po' timido.
Benvenuti al Sud Reflection
1. What are your initial reactions to the film? What did you particularly like or dislike? Did anything particular in the film “stick out” to you? Why?
I really enjoyed the film. It was not like in Spanish class back in high school when my teacher would play a movie on Fridays and I would be bored the entire time. This movie was very enjoyable. I loved seeing how beautiful the town of Castellabate is and getting to see the culture of the community in their small town. I also really liked the soundtrack. They played an exciting and fast paced Kid Cudi song that I love at the beginning when depicting Milan, and they played a slow placed and also beautiful song by Norah Jones when depicting Castellabate which I think was a very thoughful choice of music for the two cities.
I also was really interested by how some of Italy’s north vs south stereotypes align with those of the US. I feel like in the US we think of the South as country, free spirit, horses, farms,
dirtiness and southern hospitality. The stereotypes in the movie aren’t the exact same, however, there are definitely similarities in the fact that there are negative stereotypes about the South in both the US and Italy.
2. Address/Talk about a scene/sequence/passage of the movie that you recall being particularly interesting (funny, shocking, challenging, difficult, etc...) in terms of the representation/experience of culture(s) in Italy? Describe why you reacted the way you do.
When Alberto brought his wife to Castellabate and the entire community got together to create a fake reality of what the town was like, absolutely floored me. I thought it was so funny. But it was also so amazing that they got their entire community to come together and pull that off. It was hilarious, but also a beautiful depitction of how strong the town’s community is. I think it was an imortant moment for Alberto, because he got to see the community come together and support him after they had only known him for a few months.
3. List at least three new Italian words or phrases that you learned after watching the movie. Include a translation of the words/phrases in English.

4. Do you find the main theme of the film to be an adequate representation of the traditional culture? What is your perception about this?
Yes, like I stated before, I think the main theme was to show the expectations vs the reality of a quaint Southern town in Italy. I have never been to a small Southern Italian town, however, I feel like I have a general idea of what it would be like from the film. It is interesting to get a feel for how the northerners and the southerners think about each other in Italy. I think there is beauty in both regions but I also understand the stereotypes that come with both.

La mia esperienza a Roma era molto bene. Era divertente, pazza e vivace.
In inglese: Were the stereotypes of Italy and of Italians that you had in mind before coming here confirmed by reality? Explain. Which of the experiences that you have had in these 5 weeks has changed your mindset more than anything else? Your personal conclusions about your experience.
The only stereotypes I had about Italians was that they are very proud of their culture and routines. I believe this is still true. Italians have very distinct culture and lifestyle practices that I have come to appreciate and respect while being here. I think the Italian mindset to slow down and enjoy “la dolce vita” has been my favorite lesson I’ve taken away from being here. I have had a great experience in Rome. I have learned things about myself and how to navigate a new place and call it home.
Cooking Class
1. What did you like and what did you find interesting about the cooking class?
I love cooking. Therefore, I was very excited for our cooking class. It was interesting to learn how different pasta shapes are made.
2. Did anything surprise you? Can you see yourself reproducing the recipe in the future?
I was surprised that there are different types of pasta dough. Somehow, I did not know this and I was surprised to learn what the different doughs were used for. I definitely would like to try to make pasta dough at home.
3. List a few words that you learned regarding the recipe or the cooking class.
I learned that the pasta roller is called a docker.
On the last day of the Gran Sasso ski trip, we were promised a delicious authentic lunch on our way back to Rome. What we expected to be a typical quick lunch with one course and maybe even a glass of wine if we were lucky, turned into a 3 hour ordeal that included 7 or so courses. We were exhausted, our stomachs were full, naps were taken on the bus promptly afterward. But, we learned what a typical Sunday lunch entails in Italy.
